2x07/2x08 Shout Recap

Like I mentioned before due to subject matter and plot continuity this arch aired as a 90 min episode along with episode 2x20 when it first aired in the US. Anyway this is another deep and graphic episode much like the season opener was however instead of child abuse the subject is Rape and re-watching I just want to say Lauren Collins gave me chills years ago and still gives me them now.

The episode begins with the spirit squad cheering at a soccer game….well the squad may be cheering but Paige seems to be watching a rival player with hearts in her eyes….

WHATEVER IT TAKES

Hazel watches Paige looking at the guy and says it ‘ain’t never’ going to happen. THAT’s a double negative….you’re a double negative. Spinner shows up and Hazel congratulates him on scoring the winning goal. He asks Paige out to go to a movie and while she hesitates at first ends up saying yes. As he leaves Hazel points out Spinner likes Paige and she says no they are just good friends and besides she plans to date up (remember she told JT this in the season opener?). Spinner however is on cloud nine and thinks it’s a date date as he talks to Jimmy in the locker room.

Paige and Dean Meet and Dean invite Paige to come to a party.

Toby is pulling junk from his locker and is ranting about JT being messy (remember I said the locker sharing would come up again) and tells him to clean up.

Paige and Hazel and Jimmy and Spinner are shopping respectively. Paige tells Spinner via text that her grandma is sick and she has to call it off. Jimmy tells him not to worry he has a plan where they can still have fun.

The girls arrive at the party and quickly Paige spots Dean surrounded by his friends. She tries to join in on their conversation and Dean soon offers her a drink. She says thanks and he walks off and in his absence one of his friends tells her to be careful as she’s a bit too young.

JT is cooking Kraft Dinner and is tossing in everything but the kitchen sink and Toby is telling him once more how messy he is and makes JT promise he’ll fix the locker.

Dean is complementing Paige when Hazel approaches to inform her Jimmy and Spinner are at the party leading to Paige to suggest they go someplace private. Dean takes her up to a bedroom and they make out before he pushes her onto the bed where he gets handsy and soon begins to put a condom on. Paige is saying no however Dean doesn’t listen.

On Monday Paige is on the bleachers thinking about it when Hazel approaches asking what happened. Paige says they went upstairs and they did something. Said something wasn’t said at the moment. 

With all the drama, Paige forgot her MI work and Hazel is teasing someone is in love. Paige says Dean didn’t call and lets her know they didn’t just kiss.

Toby puts a divider up in his locker saying one half is his and one half is JT’s he didn’t want to do it but he was sick of JT’s mess keeping him from his stuff. Toby’s sweatshirt arms hangs over the line and JT cuts it off.

Spinner is talking about a potential second first date however Jimmy says to chill and informs Spinner that Paige didn’t have a sick grandma and was at the Bardell party.

Hazel tries to bring up Paige saying she and dean had sex however she continues to deflect.

In the hall after class Spinner confronts her about going to the party and forcefully grabs her arms to which Paige says don’t touch me….don’t ever touch me. He responds by saying why not everyone has and is met with a slap.

Toby sees his ruined shirt and flips out.

Hazel finds Paige crying in the bathroom and Paige admits she said no. Hazel informs her she’s been raped.

Raditch talks to the boys about the locker fight and JT ends up cutting his sweatshirt in solidarity.

Hazel asks why Paige doesn’t go to a doctor and she informs her that Dean used a condom and is insisting she asked for it by the way she dressed and acted.

Part two opens not with a recap of part one like the past couple of two but jumps right into the meat and potatoes of the situation. Also it is important to note that the second part has a different B plot if you couldn’t tell by the whole JT and Toby plot wrapping up with a nice bow.

Paige is having a nightmare about the whole Dean situation. She’s in her cheerleading uniform in the girl’s room when Dean shows up telling her he had a good time and she wanted it….it’s then she wakes up in a cold sweat.

I KNOW I CAN MAKE IT THROUGH

Terri approaches Paige about a music contest where first prize is a trip to LA to record. She suggests getting PMS back together however Paige doesn’t want Ashley back in because of last year not to mention the fact that they aren’t friends anymore and they soon decide to let Hazel take Ashley’s place while they use Terri’s poem for Kwan’s class as lyrics however the Poem is bad, Ashley’s poem on the other hand.

The grade eights are doing a biography project and it’s Liberty’s turn to present. She isn’t doing it on someone famous but someone who will be famous much later….Then next Jim Carry…JT Yorke. It’s clear that after last season she still is crushing hard. JT is embarrassed after class as Emma and Manny are laughing at him leading to mock Liberty.

The girls practice and if Terri’s lyrics weren’t bad Hazel’s singing is going to kill their chance of winning. Terri shows up in her outfit from Cabaret and Paige eye rolls saying that look is so last season. Terri says No she won’t and how Paige doesn’t know the meaning of the word No. Paige doesn’t think things are working and soon she caves…approaching Ashley asking her to come back and let them use her poem for a song promising it won’t be like last year. Ashley asks if they even have a chance of winning and Paige says with your song we will and so she agrees to join. The following day Ashley arrives at practice with her poem however she’s reworked it to make it deeper for the contest. She spent the night researching rape and thinks the new song is deep and meaningful. Paige shakes her head….no she doesn’t want to sing about rape just after everything and tells Ashley she wants the old lyrics….breaking her promise about not arguing about things.

Lots of Jiberty (JT + Liberty) UST. JT calls Liberty boring and says that she’ll never know fun leading Liberty to paint graffiti on JT’s locker.

Ashley asks Paige if she’s serious about winning because her lyrics are good and they promised not to bicker about it. Paige goes off about how Ashley just doesn’t understand.

JT gets reprimanded for the graffiti on the locker since he has the ink on his hands from when he was trying to wash off Liberty’s mess. Toby informs Liberty that this was JT’s last strike and that his mom is planning to ship him off to military school if he gets in trouble again.

At Practice Hazel can’t sing and so Ashley has to take the solo however if she’s going to sing she’s going to sing the new lyrics and so Paige storms out. Ashley confronts her saying again how good they are and how she researched and Paige didn’t get it. This leads to Paige to break down and Ashley realizes Paige was raped. She informs her that only Hazel knows and she agrees the new version is better but it hurts. Ashley assures her its okay.

JT is cleaning the lockers when Liberty confesses….she vandalized them not JT.

At the contest the girls go on stage however just before they are about to start Paige notices Dean in the crowd and freezes up. Taking a deep breath she looks him in the eye and they sing ‘Poor Thing’. Dean walks out mid-song.

Liberty is assigned trash duty for what she did.

The girls didn’t win the trip to LA but did manage to get an honorable mention. Paige admits she’s ready to talk and walks into the guidance office.
