12x29/30 Las Vegas—RECAP

This episode was a one-off filler episode between the second and third block and was a nice stand-alone episode that took place over spring break. This is the third time if I’m not mistaken that there has been a Spring Break two parter….the other two times I can recall are Bust A Move (AKA Degrassi Spring Break) in season 7 and Spring Fever (Aka Boom Boom Pow) as the season eleven opener.

This episode opens as Fiona is orchestrating a rehearsal dinner of sorts with Drew and Bianca. Imogen and Adam are also there but are too preoccupied playing video games. Bianca asks Drew if he’s ready and he says he just has to get his suit….but there are two extra tickets and a part of him wants to invite his parents despite not approving of things…..um why didn’t you offer Owen or Dallas those tickets Drew….hmm….just saying.

WHATEVER IT TAKES (Title Card)

Katie is almost done with her packing but Jake would be just as happy if she brought just the clothes off her back to Mexico. They start making out as Maya and Campbell come in the room. Maya tells her sister to wait until they are in their hotel room and Katie teases how Maya just wants to be alone to hold Campbell’s hand. Campbell comments how he’s actually heading home for break and Maya’s bummed she’s going to be alone for the week. She then tells Katie a letter came and is surprised Katie applied….Katie knows and between her knee and rehab she knows it’s a long shot but still she did it just for gits and shiggles there is no way…..oh my god she did….she got into Stanford which is her dream school and I must yet again say           WHERE ARE THE FANFICS OF JANE VAUGHN AS KATIE’S UNIVERSITY TA DAMN IT!  Maya and Katie are thrilled cause it’s her dream school and they have a great soccer program there. Jake however doesn’t seem too happy that she’s going all the way to California.

Adam and Drew are making it look like they are going camping because Audra can’t know about the wedding. She thinks Bianca is trailer trash and will stop things. Adam runs back in to get his ipad so he can Skype with Becky and Audra comes home looking for Adam. Audra is glad they haven’t left yet because she has a present….a camp stove. Drew tells her he can light a fire just fine and to trust him.

Margaret tells Katie that she’s proud but there is no way that they’d be able to afford her going between medical even if she takes a job and gets some loans. Katie’s sad and Jake says how they have enough saved that she can still go to TU. Granted I know university tuition especially for out of state or in Katie’s case out of country is crazy but if they are so broke how the fudge could they send Maya away for a summer abroad. Yes I know THAT was for school but still the two summers my sister went to Europe it was for about maybe a week/week and a half and not only did she have a job but she self-fundraised selling candy bars at the local bowling alley.

Back to the episode…Bianca is freaking out that Drew is running late to meet up with the girls to head to the airport and is worried Audra got to him. Fiona says how she told everyone the flight was twenty minutes early so they would make it on time.

The Mexico group are at the airport bummed that their flight is cancelled because a hurricane has hit the Gulf derailing their plans. Jake suggests a stay cation and asks if anyone has any skates as it’s clear he’s gunning for pot circles at the cabin. Katie doesn’t want that….she wants to get out of Toronto and escape for the week. They look at the departure board. Marisol suggests Paris but Mo points out its much pricier then Mexico. Jake suggests they go see those trees that are so big you can drive a car through. Marisol doesn’t want to spend her break outside in the rain however (like she would know it would be raining there…does she have like ESPN or something?) Katie then suggests Vegas….Jake brings up they are underage but Katie says they have shows and amusement parks and plenty of other stuff to do. It’ll be like an amusement park. (Yea I get this is all plot contrived but if you wanted an amusement park couldn’t you of went to Disneyland?) Katie then suggests she play blackjack to win more tuition money (despite Jake clearly pointing out they are UNDER AGE to gamble just five seconds prior) she brings up Vegas Night (note this plot happened before Katie, Jake, and Mo had been introduced and Marisol was a background character who only appeared like once or twice) and how she killed it. Her grandfather used to deal in Reno and taught her how to count cards….she knows it’s illegal but she needs to get to Stanford.

Adam is helping Drew with his vows as Imogen informs Drew that Bianca is like Shakespeare with tits. Adam makes a comment about how he’s used to big family weddings and Drew comments how this is going to be different. The group then hear Marisol and Drew starts to freak…if Marisol is here then Katie can’t be far behind….this is not good at all. Drew gets up and asks Marisol where Katie is and is soon met with her and Bianca leaving the plane’s washroom at the same time. Both girls are all HELL NO and Drew tries to play it cool saying ‘what are the odds you’d be on the same plane as us on the way to our wedding’ WEDDING? SERIOUSLY! Drew nods saying how crazy it was that just months ago they were together and Jake was with Clare and now Clare’s his sister and Jake’s her boyfriend and yea he and Bianca are getting hitched. Drew tries to play peacekeeper inviting the quad to the wedding and tells Jake and Mo to come to his bachelor party and that Katie and Marisol should go to Bianca’s bachelorette party. Bianca is upset and Drew says he just panicked.

Once in Vegas Adam wants to get the party started but Drew needs to clear the air with Bianca. Adam comments he’ll just go Skype Becky and tell her they landed safely. Bianca asks Drew what about them against the world and how she gets a part of him wants a bigger wedding but did he have to invite those particular people namely Katie. Drew overhears a couple of drag queens singing ‘their song’ and says it’s fate that she has to forgive him. Bianca does and then invites said queens to the wedding cause the more the merrier right and now they are even. Imogen takes Bianca’s phone and tells Drew no calling till the wedding and she and Fiona whisk her away.

Jake is helping test Katie’s counting skills while Mo is just in awe of all the tiny soaps and shampoos and the cozy robes in the hotel room. Jake tells Katie to play cautiously as he and Mo go to Drew’s party. Marisol asks Katie how she’s going to make tuition off just her travelers checks and she tells her friend she plans to use her savings….call it an investment in her future and besides….she’s got it in the bag. Marisol tells Katie she’s no Sheldon Cooper when it comes to statistics and besides how is she going to pass for 21. Katie shows her the fake ID Bianca got her when they went clubbing and asks Marisol to help her pick something out to make her look older.

Katie hits the tables and soon gets carded. The bouncer is asking her questions to try to catch her fake when a high roller tells him she’s with him and he leaves her alone.

Drew, Adam, Mo, and Jake are at a burlesque bar and Drew is chugging hot sauce. They then decide to play a game…name their favorite memory of Drew. Adam brings up when they were kids and Drew replaced the cookies in his lunch with dog treats, Mo brings up him drinking the hot sauce…five seconds ago, Jake says the ‘I Did It’ video was pretty hysterical before remembering the said video was about Drew taking his current girlfriends virginity. Drew and the other bachelor in the bar are called onstage and Drew can’t help but notice the huge party the other guy is with.

The high roller comments about counting being harder than she thought. He sees her lips moving but promises not to tell. They exchange names and he asks her out for drinks. She tells him that she’s got a boyfriend and that she’s trying to earn money to pay her way into Stanford. He informs her he used to go there until his start up blew up. Marisol then puts two and two together that said guy is Darrin Howe the creator of face range. Darrin tells Katie to take a risk and spots her a thousand before saying if she changes her mind on drinks to call him.

Katie hit a bad run and ends up blowing all her college money and now she’s screwed she can’t believe that Drew has his life together…he’s getting married and has a job and now she can’t even afford to go to TU anymore. Marisol tells her don’t worry and she’s sure Katie can figure out a way to win the money back. Katie looks at Darrin’s card thinking perhaps she will go for drinks with him…he is a billionaire maybe he can set her up with a job or something.

Drew and the other groom are talking and the more he hears about the other guys supportive family the more Drew is second guessing. Adam tells Drew it’s almost time for paintball however Drew excuses himself and makes an important call telling the person on the other end he needs to make a call telling the person on the other end he’s made a huge mistake.

Katie can’t believe she’s going to go and ask a complete stranger to give her money. Marisol tells her there is time to back out however Katie just can’t tell her parents she gambled away her life savings. Darrin comes into the room with drinks for the girls. Katie tells him that she doesn’t want a handout she is a fast typist and makes a mean latte. Darrin has people for that but will give her the money she needs if Katie spends the day with him. Marisol has seen Pretty Woman and tells him Katie will not be selling herself to him. Darrin corrects Marisol saying that he thinks she means indecent proposal and anyway he just wants to run ideas by her….Market Research. Katie is game however Marisol is still skeptical….she asks what about Jake and Katie begs Marisol to cover for her cause she needs to save her ass.

Adam is skyping with Becky and Drew in a panic asks him to call his phone. Drew is glad it’s working and is worried ‘she’ hasn’t called him back. Adam reminds Drew that Imogen has Bianca’s phone but Drew was talking about Audra….he can’t do this and needs Audra to end things.

Jake is ready to go ride the roller-coaster at New York New York but Katie lies saying she’s feeling fatigued and plans to stay in the room however Jake asks if she’s really gambling since Marisol just wished her luck. Marisol says yea, because the remotes are a bit tricky to figure out and Katie tells Jake she’ll see him at the wedding.

Drew asks the others if they have seen Bianca because he plans to call things off and Marisol claims she won the bet because she knew the wedding wouldn’t happen. Adam comments how yes it will Drew is just confused. The only reason he admits that he went along with the elopement is because he knows Drew is crazy for Bianca.

Katie once more reminds Darrin that she has a boyfriend and he understands and asks Katie to help him pick out an outfit. Katie comments asking about if he lives like this every day. He tells her he likes the finer things in life and wishes he had someone to share it with. Katie says he has her for the day and asks if she wants to go to a concert. She says yes and if her cloths are okay. He uncovers a rack with women’s cloths and tells her to pick anything. He then gives her a check and a bottle of champagne for the newlyweds. She asks where the concert is and he smiles as the band is at the hotel penthouse. Katie is awestruck at how surreal this is. Katie asks why he did that…the band…the dress….and they haven’t talked about face range yet. Darrin admits yes he wants to have sex and will pay her double of what she has. Katie says she’s not that girl and he tells her well if that girl shows up she knows where to find him.

Drew is pacing the chapel freaking out cause Bianca should have been there ten minutes ago…maybe she has cold feet and they’ll have to put it off…..

Jake asks Marisol what’s taking Katie because he can’t get a hold of her. Marisol tells him she was going shopping cause she had a run in her tights and needed new ones and that the shopping center just has sucky reception. Jake calls her out saying five minutes ago she said Katie was shopping for hair pins. The door to the chapel opens and Katie shows up to see a dejected Jake and its clear Marisol told him. Katie is all she needed the money…..Jake asks if Stanford means more to her then he does and Katie says that maybe if he wasn’t stoned all the time then he’d get it. Jake storms out and Katie feels bad.

Bianca gets her phone back and sees that she’s got 20 missed calls from Drew. Bianca wants to call him back but Fiona and Imogen forbid it.

Audra shows up at the chapel saying that she’s ready for Drew to come home. Bianca then shows up asking why she’s here. Audra says that he called saying he made a big mistake and Bianca storms out because she knew she’d never be enough. Drew wants to follow after her and clarifies to Audra that the big mistake wasn’t him marrying Bianca but it was marrying Bianca without having Audra at the wedding and he wants to tell her that.   

Katie shows up with the champagne to talk to Bianca….it’s a wedding present. She says some rich guy gave it to her and Bianca asks if they had sex. Katie says no but if they did she would have gotten a whole lot more than a bottle of champagne. Bianca asks if it was a creepy old dude and she says no he was in his mid-late 20’s and he was real cute. Bianca says how her guy ditched her at the altar. Katie says she effed up so much this year and just needs Stanford and a fresh start whatever it takes and she leaves to go meet Darrin while Bianca looks down at a text from Drew.

Katie is looking out from Darrin’s balcony as he starts kissing her neck. She turns and they start making out. She pulls back asking for a glass of water and once he leaves she looks at her reflection in the sliding glass doors and realizes she’s making a mistake.

Drew sees Bianca in the lobby and tells her he was a fool today and is about to do something more foolish and he soon starts to sing their song in the center of the hotel lobby in a gold sequin jumpsuit accompanied by the drag queens, Mo, Adam, Fiona, Imogen, Marisol  and Audra. Drew tells him that he still wants to get married he just wants to have a big ceremony. He re-proposes and she says yes.

They are flying back home and Jake is giving Katie the cold shoulder. Marisol asks Katie if she’s okay and Katie says she’s not….she went to Darrin’s room…he offered to give her more money and Jake pretty much broke up with her…..he went to get the water and she saw her reflection….and she took her bag and ran. Katie thanks Marisol for the keychain and she tells her it was from Jake. Katie says she lost a really great guy and Marisol offers to trade seats so she can beg for forgiveness. Katie says no…she needs to be alone for a while as she figures her future out and Marisol says she’s not alone she has her.

Back home now in Toronto, Audra and Omar throw Drew and Bianca a proper engagement party where Drew presents her with a real ring to replace the crackerjack one. It was a family heirloom belonging to Audra’s grandma. Bianca is glad she’s back on Audra’s good side because she missed her. Drew asks isn’t life a lot easier when it’s not just them against the world….
