11x32/33 Underneath It All….. RECAP

Like I said before this season is really disjoined as while the summer arch took place from Spring Break till the end of the year and the fall arch or rather fall ‘special’ took place in the last week of summer break this fourteen episode spring arch takes place from the start of the year till Christmas break…..you heard me….the same timeframe that the 20+ episode ‘Boiling Point’ arch of summer season ten spanned and what this arch brings is allot of plots in such a little time especially since unlike the serialized BP this arch ran on a weekly basis.

The episode opens on the dawning of a new school year as Clare and Jake are texting from the back of Glen’s truck. He asks Jake when he’s going to meet his new girlfriend and he knows there is one due to the smirk on his face and the constant texts since they left the house. Jake just tells his dad to see him later as they head out of the car and when the parental pulls away they steal a kiss.

Marisol observes ewe it’s gross they are step siblings however Katie has more pressing matters to think about aside from Jake and Clare’s incestuous behavior. She has a big welcome back speech to prepare for and thanks to her kid sister Maya she’s running late. I’d like to take a moment and awe at Maya at this moment because while she was one of my favorites between this season and last in the present season she’s what I’d like to call a ho and she’s getting on my nerves cause a dead boyfriend can only justify your actions for so long and I’m getting too ahead. Katie apologizes that she couldn’t get to go to an art school like she wanted but assures the freshman she’ll like Degrassi and make friends in no time.

Fiona is worried that she’s not going to no anyone however it’s her fresh start and she’s going to make it count without being in her brother or Holly J’s shadow. Now all she needs to do is find a clique of her own.

WHATEVER IT TAKES

Katie’s giving her welcome speech as Fiona’s walking into class instantly being approached by Imogen who wants to know all about her summer. Fiona rolls her eyes and says she promised to sit next to Marisol. Marisol introduces herself to Fiona not like she doesn’t already know the second year senior by reputation or anything and tells her who wants to hang with ‘that freak’ in regards to Imogen.

On the Juniors side of the school Clare’s entering class as Alli gives her a look cause clearly the two haven’t talked since the cabin and well it’s clear just from the way Clare ignores her and approaches Conner asking how his social skills program went that they are done. Conner asks why she’s not sitting with Alli and she explains the cabin to him. He asks her who her new BFF is and she says she guesses its Jake.

Maya’s looking for the music class and ends up running into a male student….Zig to be precise. He asks her that if she had the chance to save a life would she and while it may not of been intentional this intro line of Zig’s has a chilling foreshadowing quality when you think of the plotline he and Maya are involved in come the following season particularly in the later end of it. He asks her to pretend she’s his girlfriend and she complies. They introduce themselves and she asks if he knows where the music room and he says sorry he’s looking for art before inviting her to meet up at the Dot afterschool.

Marisol is looking at the syllabus wining about it and Fiona tells her to chill because the friends who took this class last year (presumably Holly J or Anya) said it’s a breeze so long as they keep up with the readings. Fiona comments her tip is a perk of offering her seat to a stranger however Marisol points out she’s anything but and lists off all the rumors. Fiona says the only one true is that she’s a lesbian. Marisol says great less competition for the male hotties and soon Katie arrives. She introduces herself to Fiona and Marisol explains she’s vice and her and Katie are Besties. Fiona sees this as an opportunity to carve out a niche and invites herself to lunch with the girls however they have a meeting. She suggests then perhaps a catered welcome back party at her place. The girls are totally in.

Maya shows up to Miss Oh’s band class as they are about to pick out instruments. Miss Oh explains how Maya’s an award winning musician and assumes she’ll be playing cello. She assumes right as Maya takes a seat overhearing Tori and Tristan talking about how Zig isn’t in the class. Maya pipes up informing the duo he’s taking art. She asks if they are friends with Zig and Tori says how he’s a jerk who breaks hearts.

Eli hears Fiona talking about a party she’s planning. Eli asks why this is the first he’s hearing about it and while he has spinning class since over the summer he’s become a fitness buff he’s sure Imogen would love to come and pretty much invites her to Fiona’s party for Fiona when Imogen is the LAST person she wants there since she wants to impress Katie and Marisol. Imogen has been hoping they’d be friends since the play and how most girls at the school don’t give her a second thought. Fiona brings up how she used to be an outsider and how before getting close with Holly J used booze to curb her loneliness however she’s spent her summer in rehab and is better than ever. Imogen teases how maybe she should go to rehab before Fiona tells her to show up to the party early.

Drew and Jake are at lunch talking about the cabin party and he and Owen start teasing Jake about having a live in sister-girlfriend. Clare then shows up saying how it’s great to see a familiar face aside from Alli and Jenna’s stink eye and then asks him what he and the others were talking about. Jake tells her the boys think because they live together they are shacking up and Clare asks if he ever thinks about sleeping with her. He has but he knows she’s not ready and is wanting to wait. She says they should talk further about it….tonight.

Fiona, Katie, and Marisol start talking about the guest list and Fiona brings up Imogen. The girls shake their heads saying no but Fiona admits she was backdoored into inviting her already.

After school Katie see’s Maya waiting in the hall looking at Zig’s facerange profile. She apologizes cause she was working on council stuff however when she sees the profile open she teases saying he’s cute and asking her sis if she has a crush. Maya says they are just friends, barely and how he’s the only decent person however a girl in her class thinks he’s the devil. Katie comments how when she started seeing Drew people would tell her he was just a dumb jock only interested in se-sports. Maya asks well isn’t he and Katie says how he’s the sweetest guy in the world and how she shouldn’t judge him based on second hand information before saying she needs to get ready for a party and if Zig hurts her she’s the president and can make his life hell….and well I’m sure Katie’s black belt wouldn’t hurt.

Fiona’s setting up for the party when Imogen shows up in a rather quirky looking ensemble before Fiona says how she’s got something that would look much better on her. She offers it to Imogen and tells her she should take the pigtails out and let her hair down. Imogen gets it….she wants to change her look so the other girls like her….well she likes who she is. Fiona knows she does but if she can get the other girls to like her too then the four of them can be best friends and rule Degrassi.

Clare comes into the living room and sits next to Jake with a magazine. Jake looks at her and tells her he’s waiting for her to talk about sex. He thinks it’ll be great and she says she was going to wait until marriage but she saw how her parent’s marriage worked out and she’s ready to do it now. Jake asks now as in tonight however she wants to make sure they are emotionally prepared and plans to give him a cosmo quiz.

Fiona’s part is going on and Katie and Marisol offer her social chair as Imogen comes out in her new dress with her hair down. Fiona offers that they play a game. Imogen suggests charades and they roll their eyes and Fiona suggests truth or dare.

Clare and Jake take the quiz and it’s awkward. She asks how he pictures their first time and he says well with her….and in a bed….and as the interrogation of a quiz goes on Jake is just being real laid back and thinking this is for fun while Clare is dead serious as she listens to his responses. He thinks the quiz is stupid and if she’s ready she’d just feel it. Clare says well then she’s not and walks off.

Zig meets Maya at the Dot which is so crowded that they have no seats. Maya asks how his first day was and if he’s met anyone cool. He says a few people and she tells him she met some kids from his old school namely Tori and Tristan and Zig’s face looks like he’s seen a ghost as Maya wonders why they don’t like him. Zig doesn’t answer and instead try’s to find an open table in the crowd.

Owen says truth and Marisol asks if he could kiss a girl in the room who would it be. He says Marisol and they kiss. Fiona is told Truth or Dare and the boy’s tease girls always say truth however she says Dare cause she wants to make an impression. Owen dares her to chug his hip flask of Vodka and Imogen tells them to leave her alone as they are chanting for her to drink saying she’s an alcoholic. Katie and the others just roll their eyes at Imogen’s accusation and Fiona calls her a liar. Fiona says she’s not going to get drunk and puke at her own party and they are talking about how they are seniors. The boys and Fiona talk about breaking into the school using Katie’s key. Katie’s reluctant but they all end up heading out, Imogen included and start covering everything in the café with foil for a senior prank. Imogen wants to go explore and Marisol humors her. As they go Katie says to Fiona how glad they are friends. Drew says the janitor is coming and Marisol comes back sans Imogen who apparently skipped off somewhere however since finding her would risk being caught the group leave with her still at school….TBC

Simpson assesses the damage with Katie the following day wondering who would break in and vandalize the school like this while Katie is playing dumb. He’s pretty sure it was a senior prank as the janitor found a student on property after hours and she’s been suspended for the day. Fiona and Marisol are looking from afar as Simpson is yelling at Katie and are worried that the principal is pissed off and how if Imogen ratted on them they could totally lose their presidency. Fiona offers to take the blame so they can keep the job but Katie will have no such thing. Her plan is that Imogen was suspended for the day and if she pleads the fifth and doesn’t rat anyone out then they can get off scott free leading Marisol to add that if she does open her trap they’ll just say she’s holding a grudge cause we wouldn’t let her into our clique. Katie turns to Fiona to make sure she keeps her lips zipped after all Fiona invited her to the party where she didn’t belong and how they can get away with this so long as they stick together.

I KNOW I CAN MAKE IT THROUGH

Fiona brings Imogen breakfast saying that she needs to keep her mouth closed. Imogen says she was locked into the theater by Marisol and didn’t do anything and then tells Fiona how she was different last year and is now being a bitch. Fiona says that it’s her word against the entire senior class so if she does rat Marisol out she’ll look like a liar.

Zig walks Maya to class and would have held her cello if she let her. He points out how Tori and Tristan are giving her the stink eye before heading toward his own class. Maya says she knows what happened the two of them went out but it didn’t work out and she’s just too obsessed with him to move on. Maya and Tori then have a catfight in the music room.

Jake approaches Clare and wants to apologize for the magazine quiz. Clare says she’s sorry too. A part of her really wants to sleep with him but a part of him is scared. But she’s ready and wants to do it that night since their parents are out.

Katie and Marisol as Fiona how it went with Imogen. Fiona says it went and Katie says how she’s freaking out because if it’s found out that her key was used to get them in they are screwed she then asks how come Imogen didn’t get out and Fiona tells them about the theater. Katie glares at her friend who says she did it to get back at her calling Fiona an alcoholic. Fiona says she is….recovering and she thought she was trying to help. Marisol says she’ll be suspended for a week if even and that they should just lay low.

Tori and Maya are in the office and Tori brings out the water works. Simpson gives them a weeks detention….three if they don’t make amends. Tori wines saying how she just wants to know why Zig stopped taking her calls and she wants closure and Maya can help her get it.

The seniors are in class however Jake is caught reading ‘Sizzle Teen’ and Mr. P reads the article out calling Jake out on what he’s reading. Bianca is giving her two cents in and there is another overtly foreshadowing line as Jake tells Bianca nobody expects a High School Romance to end in marriage. I say this is foreshaddowy since Bianca was almost married in season twelve granted by the promos for 13B which by the time this recap posts will be nearing its end I assume Bianca’s engagement is called off due to infidelity but still….

Imogen’s now in the principal’s office. When she leaves Fiona tells her she wants to make it up to her but Imogen wants to know HOW. She’s suspended for a month and on probation indefinitely for breaking and entering and vandalism and when she tried to tell them the truth she was told too little too late. Fiona’s just as bad as Katie and Marisol and she doesn’t want to talk to her.

Fiona tells Katie and Marisol about Imogen’s punishment and they are shocked about the harshness as aside from the uniforms and the metal detectors I’m sure the girls thought the crackdown was winding down. Fiona suggests they confess and name names considering they can’t suspend the entire senior class for a month. No, they can’t Fiona but I’m sure he could strip them of privileges such as Prom. Fiona plans to do it with or without Katie and Marisol’s help. Marisol nods saying Fiona is right however Katie is thinking WTF Marisol I don’t want to lose my presidency considering I NEVER WANTED TO DO THE DAMN SENIOR PRANK IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Jake shows up at Clare’s locker and Clare shows him a sexy piece of negligee she picked up for the occasion. Jake says he’s not ready to get married and Clare nods…she’s not either though someday she could see herself marrying him…..um would that even be LEGAL cause he’s your STEP BROTHER. At the same time she gets that they could break up and if they do she says she has no regrets.

Zig tells Maya that it’s his fault she’s in hot water and she’s sorry. She asks why he dumped Tori and he says he just didn’t want to start High School with a girlfriend in case something better came up. Maya tells him how Tori wants closure and he tells her how they did date for a month and perhaps they can talk to one another.

Katie shows up in Simpson’s office with Fiona and Marisol to tip him off on what happened however Marisol and Katie by extension blindside Fiona saying she was Imogen’s accomplish and when Fiona says that they were there too Katie says I was studying at Marisol’s and we have people who can back up our alibi.

Zig tells Maya thanks for telling her about Tori and that the two of them got back together. Tori shows up thanking her for helping them get together.

Clare and Jake are going to have sex key word going to. She’s talking about how it’s a once in a lifetime moment and how much they love one another and how she sees herself being with him forever however Jake….he can’t. It’s not a performance thing it’s a conscience thing and he walks out of Clare’s room.

Maya tells Katie about how she didn’t realize how much she liked Zig until he got back with Tori and asks if High School is always this complex. Fiona then shows up in the council office to chew Katie out about how she sold her out. Fiona’s suspended for a week, on probation, and has to clean up the school. Katie with much sincerity says how they’d still love her to be social chair and how she still wants to be friends. Fiona bitches her out saying friends don’t sell out their friends. But I love getting into Katie’s mind and I think at this point she really did care about Fiona she just needed to save her own ass and saw an opportunity to do it.

The next morning Jake asks Clare if she has any plans and she says doing homework and then wondering why her boyfriend rejected her. She wants to know if she did something wrong. Jake tells her how he cares about her however having sex just complicates things between them. Clare tells him they should just break up because it would be better. Helen and Glenn then come down telling the kids they are going to the farmers market and want to make it a family outing.

Fiona apologizes to Imogen during clean up duty. She says she was right Katie and Marisol are bitches and how she always screws things up and this time Holly J isn’t there to clean it up. Fiona tells her that she got her sentence shortened. The girls then begin to mock the other girls and declare revenge on them. They then start laughing and messing around in the foil and thus Fiomogen (Fiona +Imogen) is born.
