This is one of three episodes to my knowledge to air out of order in the US do to subject matter as this aired between 2x03 (Girls Just Wanna Have Fun) and 2x04 (Karma Chameleon) during season 2. The other episodes are 2x07 &08 (Shout) which aired as a 90 minute special along with 2x20 (How Soon Is Now) and 3x14/15 (Accidents Will Happen) which aired in the US well after it came out in the DVD boxed set.
The episode begins on the last day of school Jeff and Kate are planning to go away for the night and have told Ashley and Toby that they can each have one friend over and no parties.
In homerooms Kwan is giving out superlatives while Simpson is gifted with a flash animation from his students.
The grade eights clean out lockers and Ashley points out she picked Terri for her friend however soon she decides to toss out the rulebook and invite Paige over as well cause she’s sick of being the good girl.
JT and Toby ask Emma what her plans are and she says Manny is coming over and No Boys especially Boys named Sean. JT then invites Sean to come to Toby’s to play cards and says Emma will be there.
Ashley is sad Jimmy doesn’t want to break the rules and come over though at the time it’s unclear if she’s even really invited him as Paige arrives saying she hopes it’s alright she invited Hazel to join them. JT and Toby see all the girls and Ashley tells him to not tell the parents they broke the one friend rule.
The girls are seeing a campy 3D movie as the doorbell rings. Ashley gets it and is surprised to see Sean who is there for Toby.
The boys play cards upstairs and begin to ask Sean for girl advice though Sean is too hung up on missing Emma in the moment. JT pulls out some E that his cousin gave him and I assume it is the same one who gave the porn list all the way back in Eye of the Beholder. Sean takes the pills downstairs to cut them and runs into Ashley who rams into him about bringing drugs. He hands the pills to her saying to flush them while bringing up aspirin for JT and Toby to take instead. They take it.
Downstairs Paige comments once more about how Ashley needs to live a little and so she calls up Jimmy and Spinner to invite them over and the pops the E in her mouth.
Acting High on placebos JT calls up the girls who arrive to the house and are met by a stoned Ashley. She hugs Liberty basically calling the younger girl her mini me before cranking up the music and dancing….breaking a few things along the way.
The boys show up and Ashley tells Jimmy she took E to loosen up. Jimmy is upset about this and walks off.
Emma sees Sean and says they are over and walks off.
Ashley goes upstairs and sees Sean and you can bet what happens next….in a drug hazed rant she comments about how they are alike with people automatically labeling them her a goody good and him a bad ass and then they make out..
Jimmy confronts Toby about the E and he comments about how Sean switched the pills. He walks outside and sees Emma crying and apologizes about inviting Sean and is met with a random and awkward hug.
Jimmy demands to talk to Sean however soon Ashley goes on a rant…..Terri’s shirt is sparkly like the stars, Sean’s more a man then Jimmy is and she should of dumped him on his Birthday for real….and Paige is a hag in looks and personality. Everyone eventually leaves.
A sober Ashley is sitting in the kitchen the following day as Terri and Toby clean up the mess before the parents come home. They are telling her about last night when Spinner comes by with Jimmy’s stuff telling her not to call him and it’s over for good.
And the episode and season ends. What I liked about season 1 and some of the earlier seasons as well as while there were a few character arch for the most part it was episodic as opposed to the more serialized nature of some of the later seasons.
As a wrap up to each season I plan on also doing a character likeability rank on the season finale page (or as its own post depending on my mood when typing things up) and so here is the one for season 1:
