1x07 Basketball Diaries: RECAP

This is the first episode I ever saw. Season one had almost finished airing live or maybe it was already into airing season two at the time but I’d seen ads for the show in a few magazines and upon finding out we had noggin/the-n which was where it was airing at that time I tuned in and never looked back….

The episode opens with Basketball tryouts. Coach Armstrong tells them that they have an exhibition game coming up against Earl Gray and that once the game is over they will be cutting down the team from fifteen members to twelve. Jimmy is freaking out after practice telling Spinner in homeroom how he needs to be perfect so he doesn’t get cut.

Whatever It Takes…..(sing with me now) I know I can make it through…..

Showing up to Kwan’s class without his assignment Kwan makes a comment saying how she’s worried he can’t keep up with school and sports at the same time.

Ashley meanwhile is spending the beginnings of homeroom waiting for Liberty to bring the script for announcements.  As Ashley does her thing the seventh grade class watches commenting how great she is however noting that Liberty should also get the credit that she’s do.

In Kwan’s class Jimmy fails in engaging in the class conversation about Lord of the Flies since he hasn’t read the book. He complains about how he wishes he had more time and energy and Spinner nods in agreement saying how since they upped his ADD meds he’s been acting like a total zombie.

Liberty then asks Ashley to do announcements someday however she’s swiftly denied.

Moving on…Jimmy is trying to do his reading during basketball practice and ends up not paying attention to what moves he was supposed to be practicing.

Liberty begs Ashley again saying she’ll go on strike and stop writing script if Ashley doesn’t give her a shot. Ashley finally caves and offers Liberty the job of doing the pre-game announcements the following day.

Worried he’ll be cut Jimmy is plotting to pull an all nighter whishing there was some magic pill he could take. Spinner then casually brings up the fact that his ADD meds act as speed for those who don’t need it. The following day after said all nighter Jimmy turns in his English paper totally wiped and asks Spinner for one of his pills to keep him up for the game. Spinner says it’s a bad idea as it’s his last one however as illegal it is he eventually caves being the good friend that he is.

Liberty chokes on the announcements and Ashley feels bad about this.

Game time!! Jimmy is all jittery as the pills have begun to kick in.

Ashley finds Liberty crying in girls room and tells her she wasn’t totally horrible and has the idea to let her do the post-game wrap up to prove she doesn’t suck.

It’s soon halftime and while the team is in the locker room, Spinner does a little dance and moons the school. He gets banned from doing any extracurricular for the rest of the term and now has to take his meds in front of the school secretary.

As the second half plays out, Jimmy becomes a total ball hog and showboated eventually checking Sean and causing his teammate to get injured.

Liberty does much better the second time around however Ashley tells her that she’ll be even better NEXT year when she can do announcements herself though there are a few times this season she’s doing announcements for specific events.

Jimmy after everything gets cut because of his actions on the court (not to mention using the pills….did he get yelled at for the pills?) anyway the episode ends as he’s deflated losing the one thing he was passionate about….well aside from his girlfriend of course.
