1x13 Cabaret Recap

One of the fun things about Degrassi is the bands. From Zit Remedy in the original series to the first TNG band that arrives in this episode to WhisperHug in season 12 music has always been a constant. Speaking of constants remember in Rumors and Reputation the talk about the Talent Show….well my best guess is that it evolved into Lunchtime Cabaret

The episode opens with Ashley working on a song on her piano while Terri is looking at a Tarot card site. Ashley asks what Terri thinks of the song that they’ll be singing at cabaret and she asks why it is so slow it’s supposed to be a duet but with the arrangement it sounds more solo. Ashley assures her that it’ll be a duet.

Whatever It Takes….

Paige approaches Terri at school asking if she wishes to sing with her and she says she and Ashley are two girls and a keyboard and Paige says it’s lame then Heather Sinclair’s Highlands Sword dance. (Heather mention #3 and counting….I swear I’m going to run a tally until Holly J eventually shows up in season 7) Paige wonders if they can change that and she can join up but Terri tells her the song means the world to Ashley and doesn’t think she’d budge.

Emma meanwhile plans to do an interpretive dance about endangered panthers in honor of the school mascot however she needs someone to play the hunter. After Sean refuses Toby who still likes Emma despite her and Sean clearly likening one another and even dating at least once before jumps at the chance to volunteer.

Terri does a Tarot presentation and after class asks Ashley if she believes in that stuff. She says she does and watches as Terri reads Manny. She says Manny’s day will end with a twist. Paige then asks the oracle if the group should be a trio and it’s a yes. Ashley says Terri is an amateur and the act remains the same that is until Manny falls and TWISTS her ankle. Paige is now in and wants to change the name to Paige Michalchuck  and the Sex Kittens.

With Manny out for the count Toby needs to take her role as panther while she plays the hunter. He wonders if they can just have two hunters and one panther but Emma shakes her head. He agrees so long as he doesn’t have to wear a leotard.

Paige’s shows off her new costume and says she has ideas but KNOWS Ashley won’t like them and how Terri may need to manipulate her with the oracle again.  They go to Simpson’s room to sweeten and edit the song and Ashley is pissed. This is a good time to note that in a parallel to this in season seven I believe Ashley will do the same thing by sweetening and editing a song behind someone’s back.

The grade sevens work on the dance and Toby is awkward at best

Terri reads the cards asking if they should go old or new. She looks at card and says to go with new because she knows the old is boring and Paige’s way is much better. The following day Terri and Paige are getting ready to go on when Ashley arrives saying she did online research and that the card Terri pulled meant to go with old and she’s not being a part of this train wreck.

The grade sevens do their Panther Dance and get laughed at however Sean yells for the audience to shut up and let them finish.

The girls go on as Ashley watches and they are great.

Emma thanks Sean after the show for yelling at the crowd kissing his cheek. Toby is crushed.

Ashley apologizes and there re-brand the band PMS.

Like I said I do love the evolution of Degrassi bands and PMS I think is one of the long runners that last until season 3 though in the process it goes through many changes.
