The Juniors are talking to the guidance
counselor because they are getting ready to plan their schedules for the second
semester which is a building block for their final year and future both at
Degrassi and in the real world. Mia is failing English and she’s freaking out. She’s
already a year behind cause of having a baby and she doesn’t want to be in
school forever. (Sweetie talk to Spinner) the councilor suggests that maybe she
needs to tone down her modeling to focus more on school. As for Sav he’s at a
crossroads cause the music classes he wants to take conflict with the engineering
ones his father wants him to do. Mia plans to handle both modeling and school
cause she HAS to while Sav…..we’ll hear from him a bit later.
WHATEVER IT TAKES
Mia doesn’t want to look at her English
paper but she does and sees she’s got a failing grade. She asks Kwan what she
can do to bring it up and Kwan points out she’s already gotten extra extensions
and special treatment so far during the semester. She tells her if she fails
she’s going to have to repeat. She tells Mia that she’ll weight her public
speaking assignment to make it worth 60% of her grade. Mia is all ready to make
it work however she gets a call for work.
Holly J shows off her art assignment
to Miss Dawes. The still life is good but she just drew it and didn’t
abstractly interpret it to show emotion and so she gets a C+. She goes to
protest and Dawes tells her she can do it again.
The band is practicing and Sav
comments that he wishes that he could do this forever but he has to take Engineering
next term or else he won’t be able to take it in University….Again I know I
live stateside but since when would you be blackballed from getting into a
college program based on classes you took Junior Year….I mean you haven’t even
been accepted anywhere yet Sav.
Holly J shows Shep her drawing and
Blue’s asking what one he liked best. He says hers however when he tells her
Dawes liked Blue’s more he quickly changes his mind because teachers rule the
classroom.
The make-up girl comments how they
are going to be three hours late and if she was Mia’s moms he’d have her at
home studying and not at a shoot. Mia is working one her essay.
Sav goes to the music room and the
teacher asks if he’s going to audition. He tells him he can’t because he needs engineering
and he points out that not everything he does has to be for his career and
there are plenty of music jobs he could do aside from the less practical rock star.
In English, Holly J gives a speech about
how her dream is to study Political Science at McGill….um I guess they
ret-conned that one when she went to Yale to study….though I think she kept the
Poly Sci major….Anya wants to be a Veterinarian….I think they didn’t ret-con
that but then obviously she was on coke when she applied and ended up going
into the military instead. Sav gives a speech about being an Engineer and now its
Mia’s turn. She pulls a speech about wanting to be a Marine Biologist out of
her but and she ends up flunking the semester. Mia shows up at Isabella’s dance
class and Mia’s mom says how she’s getting so good and her teacher wants to up
her to more classes each weak and she comments how expensive they are. Mia says
its fine and her mom comments about how her being a model is a blessing for
them. Mia then goes to a shoot asking one of the other models how she balances
school and modeling. She tells her that she dropped out in grade ten and she
figures she can always go back to take the GED later but right now they are in
their prime. The following day, Mia fills out the paperwork and withdraws from
Degrassi because it’s the best for her right now. Peter tells her she’s making
a huge mistake and asks if she’s dropping out because of him.
Holly J re-did her work and shows it
to Miss Dawes. She wanted abstract Holly J is going to give her that however it’s
a veiled rip-off of Pollack. Dawes tells her that she needs to reach inside of
her to show emotion and Holly J talks back saying she’s being a witch cause she’s
failed as an artist and if you can’t do teach right?
Sav tells his dad maybe he doesn’t
want to be an engineer but he wants to do something with music. His dad tells
him he shouldn’t dream and should instead think realistically about the future.
The next day Sav ends up trying out.
Holly J comments it’s always been
simple work hard and get good grades but art is different. Blue asks how she’s
feeling and she should roll with that.
Her mom asks why she did what she
did and Mia tells her she’s already a teen mom why doesn’t she be another
statistic and besides she loves being a model and being able to support
everyone. Her mom sighs and asks if she remembers what she wanted to be when
she was a kid. She wanted to be everything. Baker, Judge, Firefighter, Prime
Minister, Vampire Slayer…the latter is so ironic thinking of Nina’s post
Degrassi and most famous role. She asks what about after modeling what would
she do….she needs the tools to make a good future.
The next day Chantey is giving her speech
about wanting to be a famous tabloid reporter and then Kwan congratulates them
for being done with grade eleven English. It other seasons they took English
the whole year so I’m wondering the way they are talking about various
electives for next year if Degrassi had some kind of 4x4 block schedule going
on where you took four major classes one semester and four the next…..anyway,
Mia shows up. She’s re-registered and wants to try again. Kwan says she can
have a second chance if the others tell her its okay. They do and she says how
she doesn’t know where she’ll be in five years but that’s okay….she plans to
take the general liberal arts classes and go from there.
Sav tells his dad his plans about
how he wants to pursue his dream in music and then if he wants to later he can
go back to engineering. His dad is impressed by his plans.
Holly J shows her new drawing and it’s
exactly what Dawes was looking for.
Mia tells the Guidance Counselor she’s
scaling back and only doing modeling over Holidays and breaks….yea right.
Now it’s just exam week and they are
home free….well till next term anyway.
