Terri is talking to Hazel about how it’s going to be
international day and soon Paige shows up giving Terri a fashion ticket for
wearing last year’s jeans. Hazel takes the pad giving Paige a citation of her
own because at the beginning of the season I mean school year she had a mullet.
She then goes over toward a Muslim student fully and gives her a ticket for her
Hijab. Paige declares when SHE gets offended then the line is crossed.
Simpson talking about international day to the class as
Paige whispers to Hazel asking why she’s never invited over to her house.
The grade eight group is in Home Ec and they are about to
present their sewing projects. JT has the perfect pillow while Liberty’s is a
hot mess. JT doesn’t want to be picked on because he’s a guy and guys shouldn’t
be able to sew so good (despite the classes’ teacher being a male in his own
right mind you) and so he swaps work with Liberty before grading.
Spinner jokes that when he asks his parents what culture he
is from they replied from earth while Paige is asking why Hazel isn’t into this
as it’s easy for her she just needs to wear cutoff jeans and serve jerk chicken…you
know…cause she’s Jamaican. While that’s not what Hazel is she goes with the
assumption and nods…yea Jamaican.
Liberty’s next assignment is to sew a full on skirt which
is pretty impossible seeing as how she couldn’t get the pillow right. She says
if he doesn’t do it then she’ll out him as making the good pillow that she’d
taken credit for and so he goes with her charade.
Hazel goes to the Jamaican restaurant at the mall to get
food for the assignment saying it’s for Geography. The clerk even brings up the
fact that she’s not Jamaican when she’s there.
The fair begins and everyone has booths set up. Spinner has
some kind of sausage trey representing his multi ethnicity complete with water chestnuts
for his adoptive sister while Paige is in a modified Ukrainian costume serving perigees.
Simpson comments Hazel’s ‘family recipe’ could give the Jamaican restaurant a
run for its money and she just laughs. They break for Lunch and the Muslim girl
confronts Hazel saying that she knows she’s Somali and so Hazel comments saying
to watch it or Jamaica will declare war on Iraq.
JT working on skirt and admits to Liberty he’s as good as
he is because his mom’s a seamstress and that’s how he learnt these skills.
Back at the fair the Muslim girl’s project is defaced and
the school goes on a lockdown while they get to the root of who committed the
hate crime. There are cuts of various students talking about racism and
religious oppression before Hazel is
called to the office as she’s a prime suspect because of her comment about Jamaica
declaring War on Iraq from earlier however soon they get a call saying that a
couple of grade 10 boys were the culprits.
Liberty compares JT’s talent to cultures and says it shouldn’t
be hidden or wasted and in class after she shows off the skirt admits that JT
made it not her and she just made a couple of misshapen pillows and they could
do a DNA test on the pillows blood stains to prove it.
Hazel offers to help the Muslim girl reassemble the project
and admits that yes she was Somali however she didn’t want to admit it because
at her old school she was bullied badly and has been no better than her
tormentors.
Girls ask JT for skirts like Liberty’s and he smiles at the
attention.
Hazel gives a speech in Simpson’s class saying that she’s
not Jamaican but is Muslim.
