This episode opens as Ashley is once again at home on
her piano as she’s singing to Jimmy a song she wrote. They are back together
and in a good place.
WHATEVER IT TAKES
Jimmy and Ashley are in the hallway and he brings up
last year and all the drama before presenting with his grade eight yearbook
asking her to sign it. As they are talking a random student passing by calls
her a freak because of her Goth look.
JT is happy that they finally get to have Doctor Sally’s
famous sex talk however she’s in China and so Armstrong is doing it. Manny asks
what abstinence is which is hilarious in hindsight considering what happens
next season.
In Kwan’s class the upperclassmen are watching ‘Taming
of the Shrew’ and Kwan pairs them off to reenact a scene from the play using their
own interpretations of the text. Jimmy is paired with Hazel and Ashley with
Craig again slight foreshadowing considering guess what couples get together
later on…
JT and Toby are talking about the sex ed lecture and
ponder when they should buy condoms. JT says it’s better to be prepared
especially since Toby has a girlfriend already.
Jimmy has an old photo of Ashley in his locker and she
rolls her eyes wanting him to get rid of it because that’s not who she is
anymore.
JT and Toby are at the drug store and are looking at
the condoms. There is a comment about JT not needing Extra Large which is
something that will come back up in seasons 4 as well as for a major arch of
season 5.
At the Kerwin/Isaac’s dinner table Ashley asks Toby
how the sex talk went and if they gave out condoms to the class. Ashley and
Kate think that doing this is a good thing while Jeff and Jimmy who is having
his first meal with the family since the events of the previous summer say
condoms put pressure on teens about sex.
Toby gives JT the condoms back and walks away however
Spinner soon bumps into him. When JT says they aren’t his there is only one
other person they could belong to…Toby…the guy dating Spinner’s little sister.
Craig takes a new picture of Ashley and she hands it
to Jimmy to hang up in his locker where he in turn hangs it beside the old
shot. Ashley says it was supposed to replace the picture but Jimmy likes them
both. Ashley wants to know honestly what he liked better and he says the old
look from last year prompting her to show up the following day without her dark
makeup and in more preppy pastel clothes.
Spinner is on the warpath thinking Toby wants to sleep
with Kendra and so JT and Toby try unsuccessfully to avoid him. Kendra then
corners Toby pinning him to the locker fuming that he’d want to sleep with her
because she’s in grade seven.
The girls are outside talking about some television
ad. Ashley says she never saw it and they say they’ll get her back into the
loop and ask about her style flashback as they were used to Goth Ashley. She
doesn’t reply and goes with Craig to work on scene. As they go over the text
Craig says how the character in the play should like the girl for who she is
and it hits home.
Spinner attacks Toby who admits he’s not sleeping with
Kendra and only got the condoms to be prepared for when the time did come up
and that he wouldn’t have got them if JT didn’t plant the idea in his head.
Jimmy and Hazel preform their scene and they spin the
play to be about a football player and his cheerleader while Craig and Ashley’s
version is about domestic abuse.
Spinner pulls Toby into a classroom where he has JT
covered in condoms to make an example of him.
Ashley gives Jimmy his old yearbook back with a break
up poem as while she still likes him she doesn’t want to date him knowing that he
doesn’t love her for her.
